Ms. Aahna Mehrotra is the Founder and Principal Lawyer at AM Sports Law and Management Co. She was called to the Bar in May, 2011 and has gained considerable exposure through her experiences at different institutions worldwide.
After completing her schooling from the prestigious Mayo College Girls’ School, Aahna studied law at the ILS Law College, Pune. She then worked at TMT Law Practice, before leaving for her Master in Entertainment and Sports Law from UCLA, School of Law. During her year at UCLA, Aahna worked in the Intellectual Property and Anti-Piracy department at Warner Bros., which helped in polishing her skills in the American system. She further enhanced her skills by pursuing a certificate course in Sports Law held at the University of Cambridge and a second Master’s degree in Sports Law from ISDE, Madrid. She also has a certificate in Sports Law from the Sports Law and Policy Centre, in Italy; a certificate in Intellectual Property from the London School of Economics; a certificate in Entertainment Law from the University of New Hampshire; and attended a certificate course in Sports Law at the University of Geneva, which was held in collaboration with Duke University, U.S.A.
Aahna set up AM Sports Law and Management Co. in May, 2017 and both, her practice and team, have grown manifolds ever since. She is actively involved in the day-to-day affairs of the business of sports. Apart from working on matters in various High Courts across the country and the National Anti-Doping Tribunal, she regularly advises clients on matters relating to league formulation, transfer of players, selection disputes, arbitration, intellectual property rights, media and broadcasting rights, sponsorship and merchandising agreements, fantasy sports and contract law. She has been instrumental in setting up some of the major franchise-based leagues in India and serves as a visiting faculty at several institutions of repute. She is a member of the Arbitrational Tribunal constituted by a state football federation. Amongst her most notable publication is co-authoring the second edition of the book ‘Law and Sports in India’ published by LexisNexis.
Having been chosen to play cricket for the India Under-19 women’s team and several other sports at the state level, Aahna always had a strong desire to club both vocation and passion and hopes to make a marked contribution in realizing the Indian Olympic Dream through her various engagements. Keeping this goal in mind, she regularly participates in sports conferences and seminars, both, in India and overseas.
Ms. Aastha Kothari is a counsel at AM Sports Law and Management Co. since May, 2018. She did her schooling from St. Xavier’s School, Jaipur and secured her bachelor’s degree in law from the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata in 2018.
During her years at law school, she did her internships at the Law Offices of Nandan Kamath, Bangalore, Star India Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, AZB & Partners, Mumbai and Surana & Surana International Attorneys, Chennai, thereby gaining experience in various fields like Sports Law, Media and Entertainment Laws and Policy, Intellectual Property Laws and Corporate Laws.
Aastha’s core areas of interest are Sports Law, Media and Entertainment Laws and Intellectual Property Laws. She has so far been involved in assisting in the setting up of fantasy sports gaming (mobile) applications and various leagues. She has advised clients on contracts, sponsorship and merchandising agreements, media and broadcasting agreements and gambling and betting laws in relation to fantasy sports.
Being a national level football player herself, Aastha has seen the difficulties faced by female athletes in India and hopes to make a difference by her contributions in the legal field by spreading awareness and education about prevention of sexual harassment and anti-doping in the lesser-privileged sections. As a step forward in achieving her goal, she is now a part of a special task force set up by a state sports federation for the development of women’s football.
Mr. Adarsh Himatsinghka is a counsel at AM Sports Law and Management Co. since May, 2019. He did his schooling from R.N Podar School (CBSE), Mumbai and secured his bachelor’s degree in business administration and law from the NMIMS School of Law, Mumbai in 2019.
During his years at law school, he established a great balance between classroom-learning and practical training by doing a 10 month long internship at Viacom18 Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai. Some of his other internships involved working at firms like Naik Naik & Co., Mumbai, AZB & Partners, Mumbai, Tree of Life Associates, Bangalore and Abrise Legal, Mumbai, thereby gaining experience in various fields like Sports Law, Media and Entertainment Laws and Policy, Intellectual Property Laws and Corporate Laws.
His core areas of interest are Sports Law, Media and Entertainment Laws and Intellectual Property Laws. He has so far had exposure in assisting on various acquisition and syndication of intellectual property transactions, IP and Non-IP service agreements, media and sponsorship related agreements, broadcasting rights management, privacy and data protection compliances among other related transactions.
His most recent work was a dissertation, titled “A critical study on the development and impact of on-demand services in the media industry”, authored by him in March, 2019.
Being a football and cricket player himself, Adarsh has seen the grass-root difficulties and lack of opportunities faced by upcoming sporting talents in India. That is the reason why he chooses to bring about a change in the dynamics and workings within the Indian sporting culture, through his set of skills and by assisting stakeholders to have a sound legal backing to nurture, promote and create opportunities globally for talent in sports and media.
Mr. Rijul Taneja is an of-counsel at AM Sports Law and Management Co. since September, 2017. He did his schooling from the Modern School, New Delhi and secured his bachelor’s degree in law from the Amity Law School, Noida in 2015.
After graduating from law school, Rijul worked with TMT Law Practice for a duration of two years, wherein he played an active role in the litigation team. He worked on matters pertaining to technology, media, telecom, intellectual property and entertainment law. Amongst the many complex matters he has handled, some of the notable clients he has represented are the Indian Broadcasting Foundation and Sony. He has extensively assisted in matters of Copyright Law pertaining to royalty, license fee and assignment and independently handled several John-Doe matters for various production houses of repute.
Rijul regularly engages in all types of civil and criminal matters, including but not limited to sports, copyright, trademark disputes, cheque bounce, rent control, recovery of money, criminal complaint cases, consumer complaint cases, civil partition cases and cases pertaining to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code etc.
